The history of Tavira is a story of many layers and encounters. From the Roman presence, centred on the ancient city of Balsa, to the Islamic influence that shaped its culture, Tavira developed between the river, the Ria Formosa lagoon and the sea. Following the Christian reconquest in the 13th century, new churches, bridges and walls appeared. Today, the town retains a rich heritage closely linked to trade, salt production and fishing traditions.
